Ding dong, ding dong… ” the mobile phone ringing from under the pillow woke them up.
“What’s the time, honey?” she turned her head to the still dark window, lifting her head from his warm strong arm to the pillow.
“It’s time for me to get up and prepare breakfast for our daughter in weekdays.” He pulled out his dead arm and kneaded it with the other hand.
“Oh,” she reached to rub his arm for him, “do you have to be up and about so early every day? I think it will only take you about ten minutes to get the breakfast ready. That was the time I used to spend every morning.”
“How could I ever prepare a meal as fast as my small sweet efficient wife? I now know how much better you were at doing the household chores and how less I shared them with you in the past. I depended to much on you then.” he put her hands back into the warmth beneath the quilt and leaned on the headboard of the bed, smiling down at her sleepy face. She did not wear her glasses, but she felt his gaze and smiled up at him.
“Ding dong, ding dong…” a sudden second ringing came out and she turned her questioning eyes to him.
“Uh, this one is to wake up our daughter when breakfast is ready.” He fiddled with a lock of her long hair and grinned.
She reached out and held his warm fingers to her lips. She did not know it would be like this when she took the new job. She thought she could easily find an elementary school for her daughter and then her hubby could transfer to the new city to join them soon. She thought it would only be a short time. But things did not work out in their way and the present elementary school her daughter was studying in was one of the best ones in their hometown, she could hardly find a school with same good teaching environment and good teachers, for her school was located in a remote suburb area, a great distance from the city center. But her job was so promising there that she simply could not give it up now.
“It’s too hard for you, dear, to take care of yourself and our daughter. You have never been good at those things.” She grumbled and turned her misty eyes toward him.
“Ding dong, ding dong…” there came the third ringing. The sound was like a solid quake that shook two large drops of tear out of her eyes.
“This is for the weekend.” He offered his answer without waiting for her question this time and brushed away her tears from her cheeks.
“Mum, Dad, time to get up and have breakfast……” the sweetest voice in the world came from her daughter’s bedroom.
